Hermann Rein award

Hermann Rein (1898–1953) was one of the most renowned German physiologists from 1933 to 1953 particularly interested in the body’s responses to changing environmental conditions. During this period, he was nominated 12 times for the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Rein was trained as a medical doctor and combined his knowledge of human physiology in health and disease with an interest in physics and chemistry to design innovative measurement techniques. For instance, he invented the ‘Thermostromuhr’, a method to measure blood flow without opening the vessels, originally published in 1928 (Z Biol. 1928;87:394–403).

The Hermann Rein Award is assigned by the German Society for Microcirculation and Vascular Biology (GfMVB) and sponsored by SERVIER (Deutschland GmbH) for excellent contributions to the field of experimental and clinical research in microcirculation and vascular biology.

The awardee will be chosen by a panel of referees from three selected finalists, which present their work in a special Hermann Rein Award session. Individual applications and nominations by colleagues will be accepted.

Documents mandatory for application:

One original research paper published or accepted for publication (pdf file) as single or first author (written consent of co-authors is necessary). If an excellent study has been published by equal contribution of 2 scientists, a joint application is possible. The date of publication should not be more than 2 years before the application deadline (May 31). CV including (i) areas of research and (ii) list of publications If the potential awardee is nominated by colleagues (nominations should include author(s) and article), the corresponding documents will be requested by the award committee from the suggested candidates.
